: sunbathing :

Certainly when a in sunny country you want to get a tan as soon as possible, we appreciate that. But does your northern-european skin appreciate that?
Go and ask for your Doctor's opinion when you are already hospitilised after the second day in the sun with second degree burns.

There are at least 1800 kilometer between you and your local green where you normally catch a tan. In the mediterranean the sun has a different radiation and that is where the easternly beach in Alanya starts. Your skin starts to react to the sun very rapidly. Sunburn appears already four hours after exposure and will redden your skin. Overexposure damages your skin irreparably.

Therefore, dear guests we would like you to consider the following:

Sunbathing between the early morning till 11am and in the afternoon from 4pm. Ideally wear a headpiece and start with sun protection (minimum protection factor of 20). Children urgantly require higher protection and always a hat or cap. Especially with a light breeze around you will cool your skin down always cause worse sunburns because you feel the radiaton too late. Pale skin types must not waive a sunshade. Unfortunately doctors, pharmacists and hospitals treat some unreasonable tourists on a regular basis.
Protection against the sun in form of creme, spray and oil will close your skin pores will result in higher body temperatures. Most effectively to dive into the sea on a regular basis will help your body to keep cool.

: air conditioning :

40° C in the shade is only an unclouded pleasure if the air conditioning is running silently in order to provide you with cool air. As much these things ease your life they also are often the cause of serious colds. Your body cools
down to quickly andcan be very dangerous. Often tourists loose some days being ill in bed and sometimes end up in hospital with bronchitis.

Therefore, dear guests we would like you to consider the following:

At night please do not set the temperature too low. 22° to 24° C is perfectly fine so that your body temperature doesn't get too cold. Always sleep with a wool duvet because the air in your room is constanly 're-cooled'. Children, ideally, ought to wear a light pyjama. That way you make sure that they stay warm even with the running air conditioning. It will also help protect your skin against the bloodsucking vampires, the mosquito.

: insects, mosquitos and bugs :

Mosquitos, ants, bugs and other insects are part of the daily mediterranean life. They live with us and we with them. Certainly they don't want to harm us, neither by their look nor by their appearance. And sometimes is seems
unavoidable that you'll find one in your home.Even squeamish tidiness won't prevent the 'little bugger' to dwell in your home.Don't be scared and try to help your tiny visitors to fing their way out again.

If you want to prevent the small animals to pay you a visit make sure that you won't leave any food remains as well as fizzy drinks, icecream lids, sugary food etc. uncovered in your home. Especially ants and flies are attracted to
those things in no time. Ants colonies are resolved by using ordinary baking powder or other chemicals which are widely available.

Whoever hasn't got air conditioning in his room may scare off mosquitos by using a rotating ceiling ventilator. If no van is available there is also a small electrical device which is plugged into the socket and will get rid off the mosquitos. If you prefer not to use such a chemical device there is also the t-shirt which will give you some protection against the bits which isn't the most comfortable solution especially during hot nights. The last solution is a mosquito net which again is widely available in and around Alanya, and maybe your hotel has already pre installed such devices.

food and drinks

The mediterranean kitchen is famous all over Europe. Turkish food is part of thatcuisine but nevertheless you should always remember that such food is different to what you are use to at home. For original turkish dished they use
a lot of oil and due to the heat most drinks are kept very cold. Alcoholic drinks are particualrly dangerous because it can affect your circulation especially in hot weather. In the first few days you should begin your day carefully to allow
your body and digestive system to get use to the new climate.

Montezuma's revenge (diarrhea) is normally helped with the usual medication or alternately a turkish remedy: slices of lemon or lime covered with coffee powder. Once the lemon or lime slices are thoroughly covered with the coffee
grains suck out the slice. It certainly tastes disgusting but it helps very quickly.
Also good to know for at ho

: vitamines :

Always make sure that you eat enough fresh fruit, (wash thoroughly before eating), fresh vegetables and salads. Drink at least 2.5 litres preferabley still water, ideally at room temperature. Also make sure that your daily salt intake
is high enough then lack of salt can affect your circulation.

: tab water :

To make sure and avoid any possiblity of catching bacteria you always should drink water bought from the supermarket. On offer is still as well as sparkling water. Water in Turkey is an essential part of everyday life therefore all water
available in the supermarket are very good.

: doctors :

All hotels have always a doctor available. Beside, there are already private hospitals in the region of Alanya available for tourists which are very well equipped compared to the local standard. Fees and costs for treatment is
depended on your insurance. International patients have to pay upfront for the treatment.

If you have a travel health insurance (recommended) you can use it in private hospitals, but only, if the treatment includes a stay of at least one night. Invoices can be given if required.

: open wounds :

Open wounds need to be disinfected immediately and cover, otherwise there
is likely danger of infection.

: sexual protection :

Colourful condoms are available at the pharmacy (ECZANE).

: pharmacy (ECZANE):

Medication is normally available without prescription. It is always a good idea to keep a your 'home pharmacy' well equipped. A lot of medizine is produced in Turkey licenced by international pharmaceutical companies. Pharmacies
usually show a thorough variety of medizine and are mostly available.
Medication from other countries e.g. the USA are also available in turkisch pharmacies. Pharmacists are entitled to give injections.

: currency :

Euros, US-dollars and other west european currency is accepted in most shops. You can exchange money at the post office as well as the bank (cash machines). Therefore we suggest that you don't exchange large sums of money.
Most banks are located in the centre of your destination city. All banks offer cash machines. Always inform yourself about the exchange rate before exchanging your money. Rates may vary from bank to bank. Plastic money such as debite/ credit cards are excepted everywhere.

: post office :

Post offices are open till late (during high season). You can make phonecalls from the post office itself or from the telephone boxes by using a telephone card. Make sure that you used up the telephone card quickly because inflation
may make your card invalid.

: group taxis :

The white 'group' taxis (Dolmus) also travel every few minutes. Every taxi shows the fair price (compulsory). In case of no taxi, just wait fot eh next bus.

: taxis :

You can find a yellow taxi on every corner. Please ask the driver for prices before getting in. Their prices tend to change fairly often. The driver is bound to switch on the meter, even for fares to the airport Antalya. There are taxi driver who
charge unknowable tourists during the day a night tariff which is prohibited. Therefore you should make note of the number plate. After midnight the prices go up by 100%.

: mosques :

Make sure you don't visit mosques during the prayers. When visiting head (for women it may also be a sun hat) torso, arms and legs have to be covered.
In the region of Alanya there is a new large mosque. The interior shows some stunning fayences and paintings always worth a visit.

: alcoholic drinks :

There are several brand of turkich beer, some light beers, turkish wines, Raki and other alcoholica. Imported alcohol is relativly expensive. Turkish beer as well as the wine is are not bad at all whereas the selection is fairly limited. Pay
attention when it comes to Raki, the quality is not always the same. Outside the touristik centres there may well be some shops in which no alcohol is sold.
In those cases the owner is practising muslim and stricly follows the rules of the coran.

: expeditions :

The region around Alanya offers a great choice of expeditions. Please gain more information from your local travel agent for tours and prices. The choice is so wide that anybody will find something they would love to do. A lot of the time,
tours organised by private agents are cheaper than the agents provided by your hotel. With the special bus starting from a big main bus station you can also go on trips independently towards Alanya or Anamur. This is often inexpensive
you won't have any time pressure.

: rent a car :

Normally no problem. Drivers licence is compulsory. Fully comprehensive insurance is absolutely necessary and in most cases obligatory. Make sure you always check the vehicle before your journey from the inside as well as the outside. Always reclaim any dents and scratches. Often the rental company asked for money after your return of the car for dents and scratches you haven't even caused.

The amount of petrol in the tank normally just gets you to the next petrol station. That is normal here. Seat belts are compulsory and for scooters and motorbikes a helmet is also compulsory. Whoever is caught without has to pay!!! Also whoever is not driving.

There is a lack of parking spaces in most city centres. Who parks in unauthorised zones will have his car towed away and has to pay!!! Parking fees vary from community to community.

: antiques :

antiques are not allowed to be exported nor taken abroad unless you can provide a certifaction from a state museum. That also applies to old carpets. Whoever illegaly exports antiques from Turkey and gets caught will be prosecuted (prison) and will expect highest penalties.
